The film focuses its attention on the main character Scarlett O’Hara who is a self-centered, determined beauty who is willing to step on anyone to get what, or who she wants. Scarlett deeply resents anything that interferes with her own interests. The other main character in Gone with the Wind is Rhett Butler, a bold, character who claims that his heroic smuggling during the war was purely for profit and that he doesn’t care what society thinks of him. Besides the love story of the film, one important theme of the story is the true affect the civil war had on the people of America. Instead of showing the heroic scenes of war, the film focuses on the reality of war and turns the camera towards the pain in the faces of the civil war soldiers. This is shown when the camera shows scenes of Civil war soldiers retreating from the fierce union army. These scenes are filled with injured soldiers, who have lost legs and arms, but most importantly they have lost there soul.

Besides focusing on the Civil war soldiers, the movie also focuses on the southern citizens who had to also deal with the Union Army. while the film is focusing on the invasion of Atlanta, the film makes sure to show the audience the true destruction of the southern people, and the culture shock they have to face.
