The Most powerful Court in the World

The United States of America was founded on the constitution and the many liberties and freedoms that come with it. In the Constitution, Article III establishes the judiciary branch and the power that comes from the Supreme Court. The judiciary Branch is an essential part of the checks and balances system that the U.S. Government uses. In the Judiciary Branch the Supreme Court is considered one of the most powerful Courts in the world, and many other country's try and copy the same format of the Supreme Court because of this.

The Supreme Court was first established in 1789, with congress being able to establish the format of the court with the power of Judiciary Act of 1789. the Judiciary Act of 1789 signed by George Washington, specified that the court would be made up of six justices who would serve on the court until they died or retired. With the format of the Supreme court finished the supreme court had their first meeting on February 2, 1790, dealing with organizational procedures. On August 3, 1791 the Supreme Court had their first decision With the case of West v. Barnes, a case involving a financial dispute between debt concerning farmer and a family.





In the Supreme Court today there are nine justices that decide the outcome of many cases in the U.S. today. There is one Chief Justice and eight Associate Justices of the United States Supreme Court. Every justices is appointed by the President and then goes through a finial confirmation process by the Senate. When appointed and in office, justices usually hold office for life. Even though the Supreme Court is the highest in the land they do not have to take every case that comes their way. This is because of the Certiorari Act of 1925, that allows the Supreme Court to pick and chose what case they want throughout the year the Supreme Court gets about 7000 cases, and usually only picks about 100 to review each year.

One of the most important powers the Supreme Court has in the U.S. Government is Judicial Review. Judicial Review is when the Supreme court declares a Legislative or Executive act in violation of the Constitution. The Supreme Court first used this power in the case of Marbury v. Madison, where an Act of Congress or the Constitution was the supreme law of the land. After this case, and many others the Supreme Court plays a role in which they have the finial say if the Constitution is violated.
